Dr Siobhan Mclernon is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at London South Bank University, serving as course director for the BSc (Hons) Professional Nursing Practice (Neuroscience Care) and MSc in Nursing (Neuroscience Care). A registered adult nurse with extensive clinical, educational, and research experience, she holds a BSc (Hons) in Nursing and an MSc in Neuroscience from King's College London, a Postgraduate Certificate in Interprofessional Education qualifying her as a nurse teacher, Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy awarded in 2016, and a PhD from London South Bank University completed in 2022. Her doctoral research, titled “The perceived, actual and predicted 6-month functional outcome of adult patients following spontaneous acute intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) treated in a neurocritical care setting,” was the first UK study to examine 6-month functional outcomes post-ICH from patient, nurse, and doctor perspectives through an observational cohort and qualitative interviews. Findings highlighted risks of clinical pessimism leading to suboptimal care decisions, with two phases published in Neurocritical Care and Journal of the Neurological Sciences, both rated 3* for international relevance in REF2021.
Mclernon's research focuses on acquired brain injury, including vascular and traumatic brain injury, stroke outcomes, and awareness of stroke risk factors in younger and high-risk groups. She was Principal Investigator for a Burdett Trust for Nursing-funded community-based mixed-methods project exploring stroke risk understanding in BME heritage individuals aged 18-65, revealing gaps in awareness and needs for culturally sensitive interventions. She is Co-Investigator on the WISER-AID project addressing women's inclusion in stroke education and readiness for AI/digital technologies in stroke care. Prior to joining LSBU in 2005, she served as Practice Development Sister at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust from 1999 to 2005 and holds an ongoing honorary contract there. Notable publications include 'Case study of a 16-year-old boy with acute ischaemic stroke' (British Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, 2025, with S. Edwards), 'Public awareness of stroke risk factors in high-income countries: A systematic review' (Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases, 2025), 'New consultant editor takes the helm' (British Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, 2026), and a chapter 'Management of Traumatic Brain Injury' in Accident and Emergencies: Theory into Practice, 4th Edition (Elsevier). She is Consultant Editor for British Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, assuming Editor-in-Chief role from November 2025, Chair for Burdett Trust for Nursing (September 2025–2026), and a judge for Nursing Times Awards (2023–2025). Mclernon regularly presents at stroke research groups, multidisciplinary forums, and engages in public outreach on stroke prevention.
