Solveig Olsen, M.M., serves as Teaching Professor of Voice in the Music Program within the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS), a position she has held since advancing from Instructor in 2015, following her initial roles as Head of Voice and Lecturer from 2011 to 2014. She earned her Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from The University of Iowa in 1998 and her Master of Music in Voice Performance from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 2001. In addition to her UCCS appointment, Olsen has been Voice Faculty at the Opera Theatre of the Rockies Vocal Arts Festival since 2013. Her teaching portfolio encompasses a wide array of courses, including MUS 1310 University Choir, MUS 1500 Applied Music Private Instruction, MUS 1030/2030/3030 Sight Singing & Ear Training, MUS 2450/3450 Music Theatre Performance and Practice, HUM 3990 Special Topics in Humanities: History of the American Musical, and various special topics seminars.
Olsen's distinguished performance career spans opera, musical theatre, and oratorio. Key roles include Mimi in La Bohème (2010), Musetta in La Bohème (2006), Violetta in La Traviata highlights (2016), Sister Berthe in The Sound of Music (2019), and Ann Putnam in The Crucible (2020, canceled due to COVID-19). She has served as Musical Director for UCCS productions such as Hair (2020), Cabaret (2017), and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson (2013). Concert appearances feature soprano soloist in Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem (2017), Bach Magnificat (2015), and Schubert Mass in A Flat Major (2014). Her accolades include UCCS Outstanding Teacher of the Year (Part-Time Instructor) in 2019, CARES Act Grant (2020), Pikes Peak Opera League Career Grant (2013), Anna Sosenko Foundation Career Grant (2008), and competition successes such as Second Place Winner at Omega Psi Phi/Uplift Foundation (2010) and Regional Winner at MacAllister Competition (1999). Olsen contributed as Textbook Advisor for A Teacher’s Guide to Musical Theatre (Bloomsbury/Methuen) and has held roles such as Faculty Assembly Representative (2018-2019) and search committee member.
