About Songchun

Song-Chun Zhu is Chair Professor at Peking University and serves as Dean of the School of Intelligence Science and Technology and Director of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence. He earned a B.S. from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1991, followed by an M.S. in 1994 and a Ph.D. in 1996 from Harvard University. Prior to joining Peking University in 2020, he held positions including Assistant Professor at Ohio State University, Associate and full Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles in the Departments of Statistics and Computer Science, and Lecturer at Stanford University.

His research focuses on computer vision, statistical modeling and computing, cognition, machine learning, natural language and dialogue, artificial intelligence, and robot autonomy. Zhu has received numerous honors, including the IEEE Computer Society Fellow in 2011, the Marr Prize in 2003, the Helmholtz Test-of-Time Award in 2013, the Aggarwal Prize in 2008, and multiple best paper awards. He has authored or co-authored books such as Monte Carlo Methods (2020), Computer Vision: Statistical Models for Marr's Paradigm (2021), and Computer Vision: Stochastic Grammars for Parsing Objects, Scenes, and Events (2021). Zhu has served as General Chair of the IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition in 2012 and 2019, on editorial boards of major journals including the International Journal of Computer Vision, and as principal investigator on major research programs. He is also Founding Director of the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence.
