Dr. Sophie Patrick is a Senior Lecturer in French in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences and Education at the University of New England. She also serves as the HASS Honours Coordinator. Raised in New Zealand, Patrick completed her BA (Hons) and MA in French at the University of Auckland before pursuing a PhD in French at the University of Western Australia. Prior to joining UNE, she taught English at Université Jean Moulin Lyon III in Lyon, France, and French language at the University of Western Australia.
Patrick's research specializations encompass Michel Houellebecq, dystopian literature, declinism, translation, and medieval French literature. Her teaching responsibilities include French language, 20th- and 21st-century French literature, and medieval French literature. She has produced several key publications in the field of French literary studies. These include the co-authored piece 'Breaking and making rules: an introduction' with Antonio Viselli in the Australian Journal of French Studies (2022); 'Houellebecq's Women as Melancholic Subjects' in Still Loitering: Australian Essays in Honour of Ross Chambers (2019); 'Michel Houellebecq’s Pre-1968 Nostalgia and Imagined Futures' in Essays in French Literature and Culture (2018); 'Nihilism, Declinism and Conflict Avoidance in the Novels of Michel Houellebecq' in Essays in French Literature and Culture (2016); and 'Attention Economy in the Novels of Michel Houellebecq' in Limina Journal (2014). Among her professional recognitions are the HASSE Early Career Research Award 2022 (Commended) and the School Citation for Education Excellence 2021. Patrick maintains memberships in the Australian Society for French Studies, the Australian and New Zealand Association for Medieval and Early Modern Studies, and Women in French: Australia.
