About Sophie

Sophie Ray is a Principal Lecturer in Midwifery and Lead Midwife for Education at the Institute of Health within the University of Cumbria. She serves as Programme Leader for the BSc (Hons) Midwifery programme and has extensive experience in curriculum design, validation, and delivery of innovative midwifery education programmes. Prior to her academic career, Ray worked as a journalist, holding a National Council for the Training of Journalists qualification, before training as a midwife following the birth of her children. She has practised midwifery in both hospital and community settings, with a focus on evidence-based practice and supporting informed choice for women and families.

Ray holds a BSc (Hons) Midwifery, an MSc in Practice Development (Midwifery), a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning for Higher Education, and a BA (Hons) English. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Registered Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, a member of the Royal College of Midwives, and a Perinatal and Infant Mental Health Champion. Her academic interests include wellbeing, safe infant sleeping, informed choice, obstetric emergency training, and midwifery leadership and autonomy. Ray contributes to programme validation at the University of Cumbria and other institutions, advancing midwifery education and professional practice in the Health faculty.
