Sr Moira Debono RSM, holding a Doctorate in Sacred Theology (STD), serves as a Lecturer in the School of Philosophy and Theology at the University of Notre Dame Australia’s Sydney campus. A Religious Sister of Mercy from Alma, Michigan, USA, she earned her BA, Bachelor of Sacred Theology (STB), and Licentiate in Sacred Theology (STL) with a specialty in sacraments from the Athenaeum Sant’Anselmo in Rome, and her STD from the Pope John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. Prior to joining Notre Dame Australia in 2008, she taught at St. John Vianney Seminary in Denver, Colorado, and at the University of Portland, Oregon, while also serving as Director of the Office of Liturgy for the Archdiocese of Denver. She has delivered workshops for clergy, conferences, and retreats for parish groups, university students, and others in the United States, Canada, Sydney, Brisbane, Albury, and Townsville.
Her academic interests center on the Sacraments, particularly the Sacrament of Marriage, Liturgy, and Ecclesiology. She teaches courses in Sacraments, Liturgy, Ecclesiology, and general Theology, and has supervised multiple doctoral theses. Sr Debono contributed book chapters “Worship I: The seven sacraments” and “Worship II: Prayer and the spiritual life” to An Introduction to Philosophy and Theology in Catholic Liberal Arts Education, edited by Angus Brook (McGraw Hill Education, North Ryde, 2014, pp. 234-250). She co-authored the journal article “Using standards rubrics to assure graduate capabilities within the context of undergraduate liberal arts programmes” with Angus Brook and Sandy Lynch in The Journal of Teaching and Learning for Graduate Employability, Vol. 4, No. 1 (2013). She also presented “The Three Goods of Marriage” at the World Congress of Families, Sydney (2013). In 2014, she received the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Initiatives that Enhance Student Learning as part of the LOGOS team. She holds affiliations with the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars and the Society of Catholic Liturgy.
