About Stefan

Associate Professor Stefan Meisiek is Deputy Head of the Discipline of Strategy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Sydney Business School. He holds a PhD in Management from the Stockholm School of Economics (2003), a Dipl.-Kfm. (Master of Science in Business Administration, cum laude) from Freie Universität Berlin (1999), studies in French language at Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne (1995-1996), and a BA double major in Philosophy and Business Administration from Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen (1993-1995). His career includes Associate Professor of Leadership and Director of the Studio at Copenhagen Business School (2010-2015), Lecturer in Organization Theory at Stockholm School of Economics (2004-2010), and Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship at Nova School of Business and Economics (2003-2004). Meisiek has held visiting positions at Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management, Stanford University, Aalto University, Hong Kong University, ESADE, and New York University Stern School of Business. He founded the Sydney Innovation Capabilities Lab (SICL) and collaborates with organizations including the Australian Defence Force to develop innovation capabilities.

Meisiek's research focuses on entrepreneurship, business innovation, organizational change, and learning, particularly how managerial choices enable innovation, inquiry into complex problems, and creativity. Key publications include "Finding the Sweet Spot between Art and Business in Analogically Mediated Inquiry" with D. Barry (Journal of Business Research, 2018), "Discovering the Business Studio" with D. Barry (Journal of Management Education, 2015), "The Science of Making Management an Art" with D. Barry (Scandinavian Journal of Management, 2014), "Through the Looking Glass of Organizational Theatre: Analogically Mediated Inquiry in Organizations" with D. Barry (Organization Studies, 2007), and "Into the Customers’ Shoes: Multimodal Practices for Customer-Centric Strategizing" (2024). He co-authored the book "Thin Book: Organizational Theatre" (2007) and multiple book chapters on art-based management interventions. His work has nearly 3,000 citations on Google Scholar with an h-index of 19. A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), he serves on the editorial board of Academy of Management Learning & Education, teaches innovation and leadership in MBA, EMBA, and executive programs, and has supervised PhD students.
