About Stefano

Stefano Sacanna is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at New York University. He earned an M.Sc. in Industrial Chemistry from the University of Bologna, Italy, and a Ph.D. in Physical and Colloid Chemistry from Utrecht University, The Netherlands. Sacanna joined New York University in 2008 as a postdoctoral fellow in the Center for Soft Matter Research. In 2013 he joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry, where he is now a full professor.

Sacanna’s research focuses on colloidal chemistry, materials science, and self-assembly. His work explores the synthesis and behavior of colloids, active matter, and soft condensed matter systems. He has received the 2020 Early Career Award for Soft Matter Research from the American Physical Society and a Young Investigator Award from the Human Frontier Science Program. Sacanna serves as Section Editor for Current Opinion in Colloid & Interface Science in the Colloidal Dispersions section and is a member of the ACE Science Team at NASA Glenn Research Center. Key publications include “Patchy Particles Made by Colloidal Fusion” (Nature, 2017), “Targeted Assembly and Synchronization of Self-Spinning Microgears” (Nature Physics, 2018), and “Mix-and-Melt Colloidal Engineering” (ACS Nano, 2018). His contributions have advanced understanding of colloidal self-organization and functional materials.
