Stephanie J. Rasmussen is an Associate Professor of Accounting and Assistant Chair in the Department of Accounting at the University of Texas at Arlington College of Business. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Minnesota State University Moorhead, an MBA from the University of Tennessee Knoxville, and a PhD from Texas A&M University. Prior to her doctoral studies, she worked in the finance and accounting department at ON Semiconductor. Rasmussen joined the University of Texas at Arlington as an Assistant Professor of Accounting and was promoted to Associate Professor effective September 1, 2016. She teaches managerial accounting and serves as the faculty advisor for the UT Arlington chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, the international business honor society. Rasmussen is also a 2024 alumnus of the Faculty Leadership Academy and a past member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers, inducted in 2017.
Her primary research interest lies in the implications of financial reporting oversight provided by audit committees, auditors, short sellers, shareholders, regulators, and other parties. Rasmussen's scholarship has appeared in leading academic journals, including The Accounting Review, Contemporary Accounting Research, Accounting Horizons, Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Finance, Journal of Accounting Education, and The Journal of Corporate Finance. Select publications include 'Auditor Health and Audit Outcomes before COVID-19' (co-authored with L. Morris, G. Krishnan, Z. Liu, S. McCoy, and N. Nagarajan; Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, 2023), 'Revenue Recognition, Earnings Management, and the Quality of Earnings' (Accounting Horizons, 2013), 'Accounting in Action: The Use of Podcasts in Principles-Level Accounting Courses' (Accounting Education: An International Journal), and work on short interest as a signal of audit risk. She received the UT System Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award in 2020 and earlier departmental recognition for outstanding undergraduate teaching. Rasmussen's contributions advance knowledge in audit quality, earnings management, corporate governance, and innovative accounting pedagogy.
