Professor Emeritus Stephen Colagiuri is the Professor of Metabolic Health affiliated with the Central Clinical School in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. A graduate of the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1971, he has had a distinguished career in metabolic health research and clinical practice. Professor Colagiuri previously directed the Boden Institute of Obesity, Nutrition, Exercise and Eating Disorders, co-directed the university's WHO Collaborating Centre for Physical Activity, Nutrition and Obesity, and led the Solutions Domain at the Charles Perkins Centre. His appointments reflect his expertise in translating research into policy and practice.
Professor Colagiuri's academic interests center on the prevention and management of diabetes, obesity control, nutritional interventions, development of evidence-based clinical guidelines, cardiometabolic and vascular risk assessment, the glycemic index, economic analyses of diabetes and obesity burdens, and strategies for diabetes care in developing countries. He has published more than 200 scientific papers, with key contributions including "Glycemic Thresholds for Diabetes-Specific Retinopathy: The TeleCom Study" (Diabetes Care, 2011), "The Cost of Diabetes in Adults in Australia" (Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, 2013), and involvement in International Diabetes Federation guidelines on postmeal glucose management (2011). His research has been cited over 36,000 times according to ResearchGate. Among his honors are the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) awarded in 2017 for service to medical research in diabetes and endocrinology, global health policy, and professional medical organizations; Honorary Life Membership of the Australian Diabetes Society; and the Outstanding Achievement in Diabetes Research Award. Professor Colagiuri has served as President of the Australian Diabetes Society, Chair of the IDF Task Force on Clinical Guidelines, advisor to the World Health Organization, member of Australia's Diabetes Expert Advisory Committee for the Department of Health and Aged Care, and Editor-in-Chief of Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice. His work has significantly influenced national and international diabetes policy and clinical practice.
