Emeritus Professor Stephen Crump is a Professor in Education affiliated with the School of Education in the College of Human and Social Futures at the University of Newcastle. He holds a PhD and Master of Education (Honours) from the University of Sydney, as well as a Bachelor of Arts with Diploma in Education from Macquarie University. Professor Crump served as Pro Vice-Chancellor (External Relations) at the University of Newcastle after joining the institution in 2006, where he led strategic relationships with community, industry, business across all campuses, and with NSW TAFE at Ourimbah on the Central Coast and Port Macquarie. Previously, he held senior positions at the University of Sydney, reporting to the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and working within the Faculty of Education and Social Work. He was a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Education, University of London in 2010/11, collaborating on projects related to policy enactments, higher education reform, and global change.
Professor Crump's discipline expertise includes education and public policy, leadership and organisational development, philosophy of education, and curriculum reform. His research specializations encompass education policy and practice, education curriculum, policy and leadership, social and cultural issues in education, education technology, post-compulsory education, and public policy. As Chief Investigator, he completed an Australian Research Council project on interactive distance e-learning and led major reports and an ARC project on Vocational Education and Training for NSW and Commonwealth governments, along with a Taskforce on NSW matriculation certificate reforms. He has authored over 200 publications, including chapters such as 'Maintaining the Contribution of Higher Education to Societal Progress' in The Oxford Handbook of Higher Education Systems and University Management (2019), journal articles like 'Satellite lessons: Vocational education and training for isolated communities' (Rural Society, 2009), and the report 'Opening Our Eyes': Australian Research Council Linkage Project on Interactive Distance eLearning (2009). Professor Crump edited Forum of Education, Australia's oldest education journal, and serves on boards for Regional Development Australia - Central Coast, Central Coast Grammar School, and the World Association for Cooperative Education. He has delivered keynote addresses and presentations at national and international conferences and institutions including Cambridge University, Boston University, and the University of London's Institute of Education.
