Stephen Moore serves as Honorary Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University, within the Faculty of Human Sciences. He is also Adjunct Professor (Teaching) in the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City. His academic career at Macquarie University has included roles such as Senior Lecturer and Director of Higher Degree Research in the Department of Linguistics. Moore's research centers on applied linguistics, with a particular emphasis on discourse analysis in professional communication, including the discourse of financial advisors and planners in Australia. He has extensively investigated research training leadership and the teacher-researcher nexus among tertiary-level English language teachers in Cambodia and Vietnam. Additional research interests encompass the perceptions and impact of IELTS in Cambodia, strategies to increase student participation in Asian language studies through effective pedagogy, the relationship between linguistics study and critical thinking, and coping strategies employed by Vietnamese overseas-trained academic returnees.
Moore has authored or co-authored influential works in the field, including the book 'Exploring Discourse in Context and in Action' (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017, with C.N. Candlin and J. Crichton), which examines discourse practices in professional settings, and 'Language for Specific Purposes' (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015, with S. Gollin-Kies and D.R. Hall), a comprehensive overview of ESP methodologies. Key journal articles include 'Research leadership of returned overseas TESOL scholars in Cambodia' (World Englishes, 2023), 'Coping strategies of Vietnamese overseas-trained returnees to do research in home university contexts' (International Journal of Comparative Education and Development, 2021), and 'Linguistics study and critical thinking: two sides of the same coin?' (LEARN Journal, 2024, with N.A. Vo). His scholarship has produced 50 research outputs, spanning articles, book chapters, and conference contributions from 2002 to 2024. As a principal supervisor, Moore has guided numerous PhD theses in applied linguistics and TESOL, particularly from Southeast Asian scholars, contributing to the development of research cultures in English language teaching in the region. His work has fostered international collaborations and advanced understanding of professional discourse and language education in diverse contexts.
