About Steve

Steve Mutsaers is Associate Professor and Head of the Discipline of Pharmacology and Toxicology in the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Western Australia. He holds MD and PhD degrees and serves as an Honorary Research Fellow at the Institute for Respiratory Health. Mutsaers' research centers on respiratory diseases, with a focus on the roles of mesothelial cells in serosal repair and fibrosis, immune cell dynamics in pulmonary fibrosis, and molecular pathways in pleural pathologies including mesothelioma and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. His laboratory investigates therapeutic interventions such as macrophage-targeting drugs and fibroblast growth factor effects on anti-tumor immunity.

Mutsaers' career includes prior affiliations with the Lung Institute of Western Australia and leadership in molecular pathology research groups. He received the Cancer Council Western Australia Cancer Research Career Achievement Award in 2016 and has secured grants including the Alan King Westcare Grant for sarcoidosis and granulomatous lung diseases research. Key publications encompass 'Mesothelial cells in tissue repair and fibrosis' (2015, cited over 250 times), 'Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and a role for autoimmunity' (2017), 'Emerging role of immune cells as drivers of pulmonary fibrosis' (2023, cited 68 times), 'Pleural Fibrosis: Now That's What mTORC(ing) About' (2024), and contributions to works on cisplatin-induced cell death in mesothelioma (2012) and macrophage migratory behavior in fibrosis (2024). He serves on the editorial board of the journal Fibrosis, chairs symposia at the Institute for Respiratory Health and Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand meetings, and supervises honors projects in biomedical sciences. Mutsaers participates in the Australian Centre for RNA Therapeutics in Cancer and international collaborations on lung disease mechanisms.
