Dr. Steven Burns serves as Assistant Dean and Professor of Chemistry in the School of STEM at St. Thomas Aquinas College, where he has taught for more than twenty years. Prior to his tenure at the college, he taught chemistry in New England. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts, and a Ph.D. in Analytical and Physical Chemistry from Boston College. Throughout his career at St. Thomas Aquinas College, Dr. Burns has demonstrated a strong commitment to chemistry education, instructing students across various levels and contributing to the growth of the STEM programs.
Dr. Burns teaches a diverse array of courses, including Organic Chemistry I, Organic Chemistry II, General Chemistry I, General Chemistry II, Forensic Science, Exploring Physical Science, and Chemistry in Our World. These courses cover fundamental chemical principles, organic reaction mechanisms, general chemistry foundations, forensic applications of analytical techniques, explorations in physical sciences, and the relevance of chemistry in contemporary society. As a sought-after advisor for School of STEM students, he provides essential support through exam preparation, homework reviews, and guidance on academic majors. Additionally, Dr. Burns engages in community environmental initiatives as a member of the Sparkill Creek Watershed Alliance, participating in summer sampling efforts to collect water from Sparkill Creek and analyze nitrate and phosphate concentrations. In his administrative role as Assistant Dean, he supports faculty development, including serving as the contact for adjunct positions in chemistry within the School of STEM.
