Dr. Stoo Sepp is a Senior Lecturer in Digital Technologies for Learning in the School of Education at the University of New England, Armidale, Australia. Holding a PhD, he brings over 25 years of experience in educational technology and learning design to his role. His career history includes serving as Manager and Interim Director of Learning Design in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia, Canada; Learning Designer at the same institution; Educational Design Consultant at the University of Wollongong, Australia; Instructional Development Consultant at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, Canada; and Director of eLearning at Bellingham Technical College, USA. Currently, he also holds positions as Adjunct Faculty at the University of British Columbia and Sessional Lecturer at the University of Wollongong. Sepp's research specializations encompass cognitive load theory, human movement and gesture-based learning, multimedia learning, educational technology, learning analytics, and self-regulated learning. His work integrates cognitive science with practical instructional design, exploring how gestures such as pointing and tracing support learning across subjects and ages, both with and without technology.
Sepp has authored key publications including 'Cognitive Load Theory and Human Movement: Towards an Integrated Model of Working Memory' (2019, Educational Psychology Review), 'Shifting Online: 12 Tips for Online Teaching Derived from Contemporary Educational Psychology Research' (2022, Journal of Computer Assisted Learning), 'Capturing Movement: A Tablet App, Geometry Touch, for Recording Onscreen Finger-Based Gesture Data' (2024, IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies), 'To Trace or Not to Trace? He has contributed book chapters such as 'Gesture-based Learning with ICT: Recent Developments, Opportunities and Considerations' (2020) and 'Working Memory: Models and Applications' (2020, Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Education). Sepp has developed open educational resources for UNE, including 'Introduction to Learning Technology,' 'Leadership in Educational Technology,' 'Designing Effective Learning Experiences with Technology,' and 'Emerging Pedagogies and Practices in Learning Technology.' He serves as a reviewer for journals like Educational Psychology Review, Journal of Computer Assisted Learning, IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, and others. In 2023, he was nominated for the Society for Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR) Executive Committee.
