Dr. Stuart Davidson is a distinguished Professor of Mathematics at Greensboro College, where he also serves as Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Dean of the School of Science and Mathematics. He joined the institution in 1998 and has since played a pivotal role in shaping its mathematical and scientific education programs. Davidson earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Heriot-Watt University in Scotland. He further advanced his expertise with a PhD in Computational and Applied Mathematics from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, completing his dissertation titled 'Boundary Value Problems in Elasticity and Thermoelasticity' in 1990 under the direction of Gordon Melrose.
Dr. Davidson's research interests center on mixed boundary value problems in elasticity and thermo-elasticity. His scholarly contributions include the publication 'The linear steady thermoelastic problem for a strip with a collinear array of Griffith cracks parallel to its edges' in the Journal of Engineering Mathematics in 1993. In addition to his research, he is deeply committed to excellence in teaching, for which he received the Greensboro College Exemplary Teaching Award in 2017. As faculty sponsor for the college's chapter of Alpha Chi National Honor Society, he supports outstanding student scholars, facilitating their inductions and presentations at national conventions. Elected Dean of the School of Science and Mathematics for the 2021-2022 academic year, succeeding Dr. Jessica Sharpe, Davidson oversees key undergraduate programs including the B.S. in Mathematics, B.S. in Mathematics Education, and B.S. in Data Science. His leadership extends to departmental administration from his office in 314 Proctor Hall West, contributing significantly to the academic environment at Greensboro College through curriculum development and faculty coordination.
