Professor Subra Ananthram is a Professor of International Business and Innovation in the School of Management and Marketing within the Faculty of Business and Law at Curtin University, where he has served for over 17 years. He holds a BCom and MCom from Mumbai University, an additional MCom, a PhD from Curtin University, a Certificate from MIT, and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). Prior to academia, Ananthram worked in accounting, taxation, and audit firms in Mumbai, India, beginning as an apprentice at age 18 handling statutory audits for Citibank's Forex department, followed by a tax audit role at age 19. At Curtin, he has held leadership positions including Dean of Learning and Teaching for the Faculty of Business and Law from 2022 to 2025, Discipline Lead and Acting Discipline Lead for the Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Strategy, and International Business group. His research focuses on international business, innovation including frugal innovation such as Jugaad, social entrepreneurship, global mindset and paradoxical FDI strategies in multinational enterprises, ethical decision-making influenced by religiosity and spirituality, green human resource management, technostressors and employee outcomes, dynamic capabilities in crises, work-integrated learning for international students, and solar energy storage adoption.
Ananthram has authored numerous publications, including 'Paradoxical FDI strategies, subsidiary financial performance, and managerial global mindset' (2026, with F. Jiang and M.W. Peng), 'Institutions and frugal innovation: The case of Jugaad' (2021), 'Configuring International Growth of Emerging Market Multinational Enterprises: A Compositional Springboarding View in the Context of India' (2023), 'Towards Consumer Acceptance of Residential Batteries' (2026, with N. Jayaraj and A. Klarin), and 'Management across cultures: Challenges and strategies'. With 69 publications on ResearchGate garnering 1,306 citations, his work examines how firms with ordinary resources achieve extraordinary outcomes. He has received the 2024 Asia Academy of Management Conference Outstanding Contribution as Track Chair award, Curtin Academy Fellowship (2022), and serves as Representative at Large for the Asia Academy of Management. Ananthram coordinates initiatives like MOOCs on social entrepreneurship and contributes to employability strategies for students.
