Sunil Gulati is the Michael K. Dakolias Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Economics at Columbia University, contributing to the university's Business & Economics programs through his specialized fields of sports economics, development economics, and international trade. Originally from Allahabad, India, he graduated from Bucknell University in 1981 with a bachelor's degree magna cum laude and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Gulati continued his education at Columbia University, where he obtained an M.A. and an M.Phil. in Economics. His professional journey began as an economist at the World Bank. As a highly regarded senior lecturer, he pursues a full-time teaching load at Columbia.
Gulati offers a range of popular undergraduate courses, including Principles of Economics, Microeconomics, Sports Economics and Policy, and lectures in international economics. His Sports Economics class is one of the most popular courses on campus, and he teaches Sports Economics and Policy at Columbia Business School. In parallel to his academic career, Gulati has played an important role in developing U.S. soccer since the early 1980s and has been intimately involved in the rise of the U.S. National Teams to prominence. He was elected President of the U.S. Soccer Federation in 2006 and re-elected in 2010 and 2014, serving three terms, and served on the FIFA Executive Committee. In 2019, he was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Currently, he is the Chairman of UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body, balancing these worldwide responsibilities with his teaching at Columbia University.
