Susan Blackley is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow in the School of Education within the Faculty of Humanities at Curtin University. A specialist teacher and scholar in mathematics education and professional studies, she earned her Doctor of Education from Queensland University of Technology in 2009. Her extensive career in teacher education includes prior roles at Australian Catholic University as Unit Coordinator and Course Coordinator for Master of Teaching (Primary), Master of Education, and Bachelor of Education programs. At Curtin University, she has held positions as Senior Lecturer, Primary Course Coordinator since 2014, Director of Student Experience for the Faculty of Humanities, and contributor to the STEM Education Research Group. Blackley has supervised PhD students to completion, examined MPhil and EdD theses, and served on teaching and learning committees, including the School of Education's Teaching and Learning Committee.
Her research interests encompass STEM education, digital pedagogies, makerspace approaches, pre-service teacher education, creativity in online learning, and professional identity development. Notable publications include 'A STEM Narrative' (2015), 'Makerspace and Reflective Practice: Advancing Pre-service Teachers in STEM' (2017), 'The Next Chapter in the STEM Education Narrative: Using Robotics to Support Programming and Coding' (2019), 'Re-valuing higher education: learning(s) and teaching(s) in contested spaces' (2020), and ''Sky's the limit': a case study in fostering young children's creativity during STEM online learning experiences' (2024). With over 800 citations, her work has advanced integrated STEM pedagogies and digital innovations in primary education. Blackley has received a Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning from the Australian Awards for University Teaching, Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award from ACU (2012), Curtin University Teaching Excellence Awards (2018), School of Education Teaching Awards (2015), and Fellowship of the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia (FHERDSA). She pioneered digital andragogy frameworks, curriculum transformations, and flexible blended learning models to enhance student engagement and professional standards alignment.
