Susan McMaster is a Professor of Business at Frederick Community College, where she has served full-time since 2014. She earned a B.S. in Economics from Arizona State University, followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to her academic career, McMaster worked at the Federal Communications Commission in the Industry Analysis division and Policy and Planning, contributing to projects on number portability, ISDN, and the implementation of the Communications Act of 1996. She later joined MCI to address issues related to the deregulation of the local telecommunications system and provided consulting services for several years. McMaster also served as Campus Chair for the School of Business at the University of Phoenix, Northern Virginia Campus, teaching courses in economics, statistics and research, and business math. With over 20 years of experience in the field and teaching, she has taught in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats.
At Frederick Community College, within the Computing and Business Technology department, McMaster focuses on economics education in two-year colleges, building student curiosity about economics through pedagogical projects and involvement in academic committees on student success and andragogy. She was selected as an Open Educational Resources Scholar, contributing to the conversion of Principles of Macroeconomics to OER materials. McMaster has introduced a new Honors Economics section, with students completing honors papers and presentations. Her research interests include infrastructure and telecommunications, reflected in publications such as the chapter 'Telecommunications' (2019) and the article 'The Effect of Incentive Regulation on Infrastructure Modernization: Local Exchange Companies' Deployment of Digital Technology' (1995), which has garnered citations. She serves on the American Economic Association's Committee on Economic Education and participates in related conferences and initiatives. McMaster has been active in the College Senate and other institutional roles.
