About Susie
Susie Wilson is Principal Lecturer in Rehabilitation at the University of Cumbria, where she leads the occupational therapy and physiotherapy programme teams and serves as Professional Lead for Occupational Therapy within the Institute of Health. She joined the university in 2006 following sixteen years of clinical practice in the NHS and third sector, where she worked as an occupational therapist and neuro-rehabilitation co-ordinator, leading multi-disciplinary teams in the care of individuals with brain injury, stroke, long-term neurological conditions, and complex disabilities. Her academic qualifications include an MSc, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PgCE), a Diploma in Occupational Therapy (Dip COT), and she is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). She is currently pursuing a PhD in Educational Research at Lancaster University. Wilson’s research and academic interests focus on occupational therapy student education, particularly learning on role-emerging practice placements and threshold concepts in technology-enabled care services during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has a particular interest in neuro occupational therapy and the use of arts in health to support recovery, health, and wellbeing.
Key contributions include presentations and posters at national and international conferences, such as the AESOP National Arts in Health Conference in 2018, the Royal College of Occupational Therapists Annual Conference in 2021, and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists Congress in 2022. She has also served as an External Examiner for MSc Occupational Therapy at Leeds Beckett University from 2017 to 2021 and continues in a similar role for PG/MSc Advancing Practice. Additionally, she is a Partner Governor at North Cumbria Integrated Care Trust since July 2023 and maintains memberships with the Health and Care Professions Council, the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, and its Specialist Section in Neurological Practice. Wilson is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and is a member of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists Specialist Section - Neurological Practice.
