Suzette Fromm Reed, PhD, is a community psychologist and Associate Professor in the College of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences at National Louis University, where she has served since 2005. Initially appointed as Assistant Professor, she was promoted to Associate Professor in 2013 and currently chairs the PhD program in Community Psychology, which she founded and developed. Her academic background includes a PhD in Psychology in the Public Interest from North Carolina State University (2004), with a dissertation on the processes moderating community structural factors on child abuse and neglect; an MA in Clinical Psychology from California School of Professional Psychology (1997); and a BA in Psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago (1994). Prior to her academic career at National Louis University, she held positions such as Vice President of Planning, Program Evaluation, and Quality Improvement at ChildServ (2004-2005), Research Director at Prevent Child Abuse America (2000-2004), Research Associate at Harvard University's Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (1994-1995), and Instructor at North Carolina State University (1997-1999), where she was awarded Instructor of the Year in 1998.
Dr. Fromm Reed's research specializations focus on primary prevention strategies addressing community impacts on women, children, and families, including community resilience, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), mentoring non-traditional adult students, and girls' and women's empowerment. Key publications include the peer-reviewed article 'Community-Wide Resilience Mitigates Adverse Childhood Experiences on Adult and Youth Health, School/Work, and Problem Behaviors' (American Psychologist, 2021, with D. Longhi and M. Brown); 'How to Increase Community-Wide Resilience to Decrease Inequalities due to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): A Case Study' (Journal of Prevention and Intervention in the Community, 2019); 'School and Community-Based Childhood Obesity: Implications for Policy and Practice' (Journal of Prevention & Intervention in the Community, 2014, with J. Viola); and her book 'The Processes that Moderate the Effect of Community Structural Factors on Neighborhood Child Maltreatment Rates' (2007). She has received the Excellence in Research, Scholarship, and Inquiry Award (2018), the American Psychological Association Society for Community Research and Action Award for Excellence in Educational Programming (2017), and acceptance into the APA Women in Leadership program (2015-2016). As principal investigator, she secured a $306,000 SAMHSA grant for ACEs in suicide prevention (2018-2021) among other funded projects. Dr. Fromm Reed has delivered numerous trainings and keynote speeches on trauma-informed practices and community resilience, served as editor for community psychology bulletins, and consulted for initiatives like the Resilient Belmont Cragin Community Collaborative.
