Dr Sven Jonuscheit is a Senior Lecturer in Vision Sciences at Glasgow Caledonian University in the School of Health and Life Sciences, where he serves as Programme Lead for the MSc in Investigative Ophthalmology and Vision Research and leads the GCU Vision Research Group. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Vision Sciences from Glasgow Caledonian University following optometry studies in Berlin and Philadelphia. A registered clinician, educator, and researcher, he is a member of The College of Optometrists (UK) and the Association of German Contact Lens Practitioners and Optometrists (VDCO). With significant experience in curriculum development, delivery, and quality assurance, he holds Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. Jonuscheit contributes to international optometry standards as an editorial board member of the peer-reviewed journal Optometry and Contact Lenses (OCL), Accreditation Visitor Panel member of the European Council of Optometry and Optics (ECOO), and panel member of the Quality Assurance Standards in Optometry Alliance (Gütegemeinschaft Optometrische Leistungen e.V., Germany).
His research specializations encompass the structure and function of the eye in health and disease, ophthalmic public health, and delivery of eye care nationally and internationally. Funded by The College of Optometrists, The Visual Research Trust, The Carnegie Trust, Santander Universities UK, and the Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Government, key projects include Reducing Blindness and Visual Impairment in People Experiencing Homelessness (2025), Testing of sight - a risk-based framework project report (2025), and task-shifting studies for eye care workers in Ghana and Scotland (2024). Notable publications feature Barriers to accessing eye care in Pakistan: a mixed methods study (2025, Primary Health Care Research & Development), Topical review: Task shifting and the recruitment and retention of eye health workers in underserved areas (2024, Optometry and Vision Science), Interventions for visual field defects in patients with stroke (2011, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews), Patient-reported severity of dry eye and quality of life in diabetes (2019, Clinical Ophthalmology), and regional corneal thickness assessments using Orbscan II and ultrasound pachymetry (2007). He supervises PhD students, performs extensive peer review activities, and engages in academic committees and conferences, impacting vision sciences and public health.
