T.J. Atwood is a Professor in the William Dillard Department of Accounting at the Sam M. Walton College of Business, University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, aligning with the Business & Economics faculty. She holds a PhD in Accountancy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1995), an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin (1990), and is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in Texas since 1984. Atwood's research focuses on taxation, including international taxation, book-tax conformity, compensation, implicit taxes, and accounting for income taxes. Her scholarly work appears in premier outlets such as the Journal of Accounting Research, The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Contemporary Accounting Research, Journal of the American Taxation Association, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, Review of Accounting and Finance, and Managerial Finance. Key publications include "Home Country Tax System Characteristics and Corporate Tax Avoidance: International Evidence" with Michael S. Drake, James N. Myers, and Linda A. Myers (The Accounting Review, 2012), "The Complementarity Between Tax Avoidance and Manager Diversion: Evidence from Tax Haven Firms" with Christa Lewellen (2019), and "Information Systems for Collaborating Versus Transacting: Impact on Manufacturing Plant Performance in the Presence of Demand Volatility" with Terence J. Saldanha, Nelson P. Melville, and Ruben Ramirez (Journal of Operations Management, 2013).
Atwood has earned the Outstanding Paper Award from the Journal of the American Taxation Association (2008), the Emerald Literati Network Highly Commended Paper Award (2011), and the American Taxation Association Best Discussant Award (2012). She served as a past editorial board member for the Journal of the American Taxation Association. In service roles, she acted as faculty representative on the All-University Conduct Board from Fall 2021 to Spring 2024 and advised the Walton College Master of Accountancy student team that advanced to the final four in a national tax case competition. Atwood has chaired doctoral dissertations, including those of Tyler Johnson and Jennifer C. Large. Her contributions during the department's growth phase from 2000 to 2014 included promotion within the faculty ranks, advancing from hires and promotions noted in departmental history to her current professorial position, as reflected in university budget documents listing her as Professor in the Walton College of Business.
