Tafa Tuputau Tafa Laulu is the Mentoring Programme Co-ordinator at Va’a o Tautai – Centre for Pacific Health, part of the University of Otago's Division of Health Sciences. In this capacity, he manages the mentoring aspects of the Pacific Opportunities Programmes at Otago (POPO), delivering targeted academic support and mentoring services to Pacific students enrolled in health sciences courses across all University of Otago campuses. His efforts focus on enhancing Pacific student success and retention in health-related disciplines by providing culturally responsive guidance and resources. Va’a o Tautai, located at 71 Frederick Street in Dunedin, leads Pacific health teaching, research, and student support initiatives throughout the university.
Born and raised in Samoa, Tafa Tuputau Tafa Laulu migrated to Aotearoa New Zealand with his family at age 13 and completed his secondary education in Masterton. He relocated to Dunedin in 2020 to pursue higher education at the University of Otago, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Sociology, achieving second class honours Division I, and subsequently a BA Honours in Sociology in 2023. Before joining Va’a o Tautai, he accumulated three years of hands-on experience supporting students as a sub-warden, developing expertise in student engagement and welfare. Passionate about Pacific communities, Tafa remains actively involved in Dunedin's Samoan community, drawing on his sociological background and personal heritage to effectively support Pacific health sciences students. His career trajectory reflects a commitment to equity and cultural inclusion in health education.
