Muhammad Tahir Suleman served as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Accountancy and Finance at the University of Otago, part of the Otago Business School. He holds a PhD in Finance from Victoria University of Wellington (2017), an MSc in Quantitative Finance from Hanken School of Economics, Finland (2010), an MS in Financial Economics from University of Skövde, Sweden (2008), and an MBA in Finance from The University of Faisalabad, Pakistan (2006). His career includes roles as Lecturer in the Department of Financial and Business Systems at Lincoln University (2019–2020), Research Fellow and Tutor/Teaching Fellow at Victoria University of Wellington (2013–2019), Lecturer at Wellington Institute of Technology (2015–2019), and earlier positions in Pakistan. Joining the University of Otago as Lecturer in February 2020, he advanced to Senior Lecturer in 2022, supervising PhD and MCom students in areas such as climate policy uncertainty and corporate investment.
Suleman's research focuses on climate and energy finance, policy uncertainty, corporate finance, machine learning in finance, FinTech innovation, and financial econometrics. He has authored numerous publications in leading journals, including "Green investments: A luxury good or a financial necessity?" (Energy Economics, 2021), "Economic policy uncertainty, oil price shocks and corporate investment: Evidence from the oil industry" (Energy Economics, 2021), "Infectious disease and corporate activities" (Economics Letters, 2022), "Is marriage a turning point? Evidence from cash holdings behaviour" (British Journal of Management, 2024), "Infectious Disease and Asymmetric Industrial Volatility" (Applied Finance Letters, 2024), and "Do stock market fluctuations lead to currency deflation in the South Asian region?" (International Journal of Finance & Economics, 2024). His work examines volatility connectedness, geopolitical risks, sustainable investments, and high-frequency market dynamics. Recognized with the Otago Business School Best Emerging Researcher award (2020), 2018 BLR Outstanding Research Award, and 2023 NZX-CGI Best Paper Award, Suleman ranks in the top 10% of SSRN authors by downloads. He has refereed for over 45 journals, examined 20 PhD theses, supervised PhD completions, and presented at conferences like the New Zealand Finance Colloquium and GRASFI at Yale University.
