Tami J. Draves is the Marion Stedman Covington Distinguished Professor of Music Education in the School of Music at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), where she also holds the position of Provost Fellow with a focus on faculty affairs, including university-wide faculty development and policy work. She coordinates the master’s and doctoral programs in music education, teaches graduate courses, and advises graduate students. Draves joined UNCG in 2016 following her tenure on the faculty at the University of Arizona. Her research interests encompass preservice and inservice music teacher preparation and support, with particular emphasis on identity development and individuals from populations marginalized in music. Her publications appear in prestigious journals including the Journal of Research in Music Education, Journal of Music Teacher Education, Music Education Research, Research Studies in Music Education, Contributions to Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, and Arts Education Policy Review. Key works include “I Made Myself Fit In”: Johny's Story (Journal of Research in Music Education, 2022, with Jonathan E. Vargas), A Narrative of Two Preservice Music Teachers with Visual Impairment (Journal of Research in Music Education, 2016, with Elizabeth C. Parker), Teaching Ambition: A Case Study of High School Music Students (Music Education Research, 2012), and Paul’s Beginning Music Teacher Identity (Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, 2019).
Draves has presented her research nationally and internationally and frequently serves as a guest lecturer and visiting scholar. She is a former member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Music Teacher Education and Contributions to Music Education, and a reviewer for Research Studies in Music Education and Psychology of Music. Currently, she serves as Chair-Elect of the Society for Music Teacher Education. Within UNCG, she developed and facilitates the Faculty Development Program in the School of Music, fostering community, support, professional productivity, and healthy work relationships among faculty. She has previously held roles as Chair of the General Faculty and Faculty Senate, and Interim Director of the School of Music. Draves is an alumnus of the Center for Creative Leadership’s Leadership Development Program, Eastman Leadership Conference, and BRIDGES Leadership Program, and is pursuing certification as an Associate Certified Coach with the International Coaching Federation.
