Terence Tan Peng Lian serves as Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Science at Curtin University Malaysia's Sarawak campus. In addition, he is the Program Coordinator for Computing programmes. Tan holds a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Computing from Imperial College London and a Master of Science (MSc) in International Business Economics from City University London. He began his teaching career at Curtin Sarawak in 2005 as a lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, later advancing to his current senior role and departmental leadership position.
Tan's research specializations encompass Information Technology, Machine Learning, and Algorithm Design, reflected in his Google Scholar profile with 184 citations, an h-index of 7, and an i10-index of 4. Key publications feature 'Computational Red Teaming for Physical Security Simulation Planning' (Tan et al., IEEE, 2014), 'Learning and Cooperating Multi-Agent Scheduling Repair Algorithm' (Tan et al.), contributions to 'Breaking Into BIM Physical Security Simulation Utilising Building Information Modelling' (Porter et al., 2014), and 'T-DepExp: Simulating Transitive Dependence Based Coalition Formation' (Lau, Singh, Tan Peng Lian). He has earned notable recognition for teaching, including Curtin's Excellence and Innovation in Teaching (EIT) Award in 2008, the Excellence in Teaching Award for the early career category, and the Student Choice Award for three consecutive years. Under his mentorship, students secured victories in the Sarawak Open Source Competition in 2006 and 2007, as well as the SCOPE ICT Competition in 2007. Tan instructs courses on ethics and professionalism in engineering and computer-related fields, and he co-developed a BLOCKS game employed in research detailed in the paper 'Teaching Engineering Ethics using BLOCKS Game.' He further contributes as a facilitator for SPM preparation workshops aimed at fifth-form students and as a mentor within the John Curtin Leadership Academy programme.
