A graduate of Wartburg College with a B.A. in Computer Science in 1989, he continued his education at the University of Iowa, where he earned an M.S. in Computer Science in 1991 and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering in 2008. Letsche served as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Iowa from 1989 to 1991. He joined the faculty at Wartburg College in 2003 as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science, advancing to Associate Professor and recently promoted to full Professor in the computer science department.
Letsche's academic interests include data science and databases, as noted on his Google Scholar profile. His publications demonstrate expertise in data modeling, mining, and computational methods. Key works include 'Data modelling with IDEF1x' (1997, International Journal of Computer Integrated Manufacturing, co-authored with A. Kusiak and A. Zakarian, 60 citations); 'Mining transformed data sets' (2004, International Conference on Knowledge-Based and Intelligent Information and Engineering Systems, co-authored with A. Burns and A. Kusiak, 18 citations); and 'COBOL for the 21st Century' (2003, Wiley, co-authored with N.B. Stern, R.A. Stern, and J.P. Ley, 18 citations). Additional publications are 'Hacking as a Game' (2014, Midwest Instruction and Computing Symposium); 'Service Learning Outcomes in an Undergraduate Data Mining Course' (2007, Proceedings of the 40th Midwest Instruction and Computing Symposium); and 'Mining wavelet transformed boiler data sets' (2008, Ph.D. dissertation, University of Iowa).
