About Teuila

Teuila Percival is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland. She is a consultant paediatrician and the first Sāmoan paediatrician in Aotearoa New Zealand. Percival holds an MBChB and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). She trained in paediatrics at the University of Auckland medical school and has worked clinically at Middlemore Hospital’s KidzFirst Children’s Hospital since 1995. Her career includes early work at the National Hospital in Apia, Samoa, following graduation.

Percival’s academic and professional contributions focus on Pacific children’s health, maternal and child health, child protection, and community paediatrics. She has held leadership roles including founding member and Deputy Chair of South Seas Healthcare, founding member of the Pacific Medical Association, and positions on government health advisory groups. In 2010 she was appointed a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order (QSO) for services to the Pacific community, particularly her response to the 2009 Samoa tsunami. In 2023 she was made a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (DNZM) for her decades of work improving health outcomes for Pacific children and families. Percival also contributes to teaching as a part-time lecturer in the Department of Paediatrics and has been involved in research and advocacy addressing health inequities, disaster response, and community-based care in South Auckland and the wider Pacific region.
