Dr. Thomas J. Lynch Jr., MD, serves as President and Director of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, holding the Raisbeck Endowed Chair, and is a Professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Washington School of Medicine. In the field of Medicine at Fred Hutch Cancer Center, he sets the strategic direction, oversees centerwide initiatives, represents the institution to major partners and governmental bodies, directs the Fred Hutch/University of Washington/Seattle Children's Cancer Consortium, and acts as principal investigator for its Cancer Center Support Grant. Prior to joining Fred Hutch in February 2020, Dr. Lynch was Chief Scientific Officer at Bristol-Myers Squibb, where he led research and development in cancer, cardiovascular disease, fibrosis, and immunoscience. His distinguished career also encompasses CEO of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization, Director of Yale Cancer Center, Physician-in-Chief of Yale’s Smilow Cancer Hospital, Chief of Hematology-Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Yale School of Medicine. He completed his MD at Yale School of Medicine in 1986 and BS in Biology, magna cum laude, at Yale College in 1982, followed by clinical training in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and medical oncology training at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
A world-renowned oncologist, Dr. Lynch was part of the first research team to discover activating mutations in the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) underlying responsiveness of non-small-cell lung cancer to gefitinib, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2004. His work has advanced precision medicine, immuno-oncology, and solid tumor research, with authorship of more than 100 original scientific papers and over 90 review articles and book chapters. He received the 2009 Award for Scientific Excellence from the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, 2010 Team Science Award from the American Association for Cancer Research, 2009 Joseph Martin Prize for Research from Massachusetts General Hospital, 1998 Teaching Award from oncology fellows at Massachusetts General Hospital/Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 1986 Nicholas Giarman Prize in Pharmacology from Yale Medical School, and 1983 Research Prize from the National Medical Student Research Forum. Dr. Lynch is a founding board member of the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare and holds memberships in the American Association for Cancer Research, American Society of Clinical Oncology, International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, and Washington State Academy of Sciences.
