Professor Thomas Newe serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Limerick's Faculty of Science and Engineering. A faculty member since 1994, he progressed through positions including Junior Lecturer from 1994, Lecturer from 1999, Senior Lecturer from 2016, and Professor from 2022. He earned his B.Eng. in Computer Engineering in 1991, Masters of Engineering in Security Protocol Design in 1996, and PhD in Formal Logics for Security Protocol Verification in 2003, all from the University of Limerick. Earlier in his career, he held engineering roles such as Software Design Engineer at Microelectronics Applications Centre Ltd. from 1991, Test Engineer at Nixdorf Computer Int., and Technician at Urovac Ltd.
His research focuses on cybersecurity aspects including wireless sensor networks and IoT, cyber-physical systems for smart manufacturing, securing remote control operations, environment monitoring sensor networks, cryptography and encryption algorithms, data and network security protocols, security for the cloud, formal verification methods, and digital media anti-piracy methods. Professor Newe has authored over 190 journal and conference publications and has graduated numerous PhD students. Key publications include "CRISP: Cyber-Resilient Intelligent Systems for Predicting Threats in Digital Ecosystems" (IEEE Access, 2026, with P. Verma et al.), "ABIDS-VEM: leveraging an equilibrium optimizer and data ramification in association with ensemble learning for anomaly-based intrusion detection system" (Journal of Supercomputing, 2025, with P. Verma et al.), "A Novel MQTT-ZT Secure Broker: Zero Trust Architecture for IoT Security" (IEEE CSR 2025, with M. James et al.), and contributions to books such as "Artificial Intelligence-Based Smart Healthcare Systems" (2025, edited with K.N. Qureshi and G. Jeon). He is a Principal Investigator in centres like Lero, Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems, and Optical Fibre Sensors Research Centre. Additionally, he is a board member of Cyber Ireland since 2019, founding member of CyberSkills since 2020, and holds various committee positions.
