About Til

Dame Til Wykes is Professor of Clinical Psychology and Rehabilitation at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King's College London. She held the position of Head of the School of Mental Health & Psychological Sciences from 2014 to 2025 and serves as a consultant clinical psychologist at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Wykes directed the NIHR Clinical Research Network: Mental Health until 2017, acting as senior spokesperson on mental health for NIHR, and leads the NIHR Maudsley BRC Patient and Carer Involvement cluster. She founded and co-directs the Service User Research Enterprise (SURE), which employs researchers with lived experience of mental health services to integrate service user perspectives into research. Her research specializes in rehabilitation and recovery for severe mental illness, including developing and evaluating innovative psychological treatments for schizophrenia such as cognitive remediation therapy (CRT), digital mental health services, predicting and personalizing treatments, and enhancing service user involvement. Wykes developed the CIRCuiTS cognitive remediation software, adopted internationally, and contributed to national and international research strategies through the European ROAMER project (2015) and UK Mental Health Research Goals (2021).

Wykes edits the Journal of Mental Health and has held leadership roles including secretary, treasurer, president elect, and president of the Schizophrenia International Research Society. She participates in grant review panels, serves as a trustee for Weight Concern, and chairs the Cognitive Remediation Experts Workshop. Her impact is recognized by a Damehood (DBE) awarded in 2016, Lifetime Achievement Awards from the International Neuropsychological Society (2022) and Schizophrenia International Research Society (2024), the EPA Constance Pascal–Helen Boyle Prize for Outstanding Achievement by a Woman in Improving Mental Health Care in Europe (2020), British Psychological Society awards including the M.B. Shapiro Award, May Davidson Award, and 2014 Award for Promoting Equality of Opportunity, and fellowships from the Academy of Medical Sciences, Academy of Social Sciences, and British Psychological Society. She shares a Guinness World Record for the largest mental health lesson (2017). Key publications include the meta-analysis 'A Meta-Analysis of Cognitive Remediation for Schizophrenia: Methodology and Effect Sizes' (American Journal of Psychiatry, 2011), the book 'Cognitive Remediation Therapy for Schizophrenia: Theory and Practice' (2008, co-authored with Clare Reeder), and the randomized controlled trial 'Cognitive Remediation Therapy in Schizophrenia' (British Journal of Psychiatry, 2007).
