Professor Tim Miller holds the position of Professor of Artificial Intelligence and UQ-TIET Chair in Data Science within the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Queensland, located in Meaanjin/Brisbane, Australia. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science from The University of Queensland in 2005, with a thesis entitled "Using specification animation to support specification testing and software testing." Professor Miller's research integrates machine learning, reinforcement learning, AI planning, interaction design, and cognitive science to enhance human decision-making. His primary focus areas encompass explainable artificial intelligence, human-AI collaborative planning, and human-centered decision support systems.
Before his current role at The University of Queensland, Professor Miller served as a Professor of Computer Science in the School of Computing and Information Systems at The University of Melbourne, where he was the founding co-director of the Centre for AI and Digital Ethics. He continues as an honorary professor at the University of Melbourne. Among his notable publications are the books "Mastering Reinforcement Learning" (2024) and "Introduction to Software Innovation" (2026), both published by The University of Queensland. Key journal articles include "Using generative artificial intelligence in clinical practice: a narrative review and proposed agenda for implementation" co-authored with Ian A. Scott et al. (2025, Medical Journal of Australia), "Directive explanations for actionable explainability in machine learning applications" (2023, ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent Systems), "Diametrically opposed attributes? Review process preferences and priorities when contesting algorithmic decisions" (2025, Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction), and "Towards Explainable Goal Recognition Using Weight of Evidence (WoE): A Human-Centered Approach" (2025, Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research). He has also contributed to book chapters such as "Transforming food production with AI" (2024) and "Demystifying consumer-facing fintech accountability for automated advice tools" (2024). Professor Miller is currently leading research funded by an NHMRC Partnership Project spanning 2024 to 2029, focused on healthcare interventions in alcohol and other drug services. His contributions significantly influence the development of ethical and effective AI technologies for real-world applications.
