About Tim

Tim Schittekatte is a Senior Lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management in Business & Economics, where he instructs the course “Engineering, Economics and Regulation of the Electric Power Sector.” He is affiliated with the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) and the MIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research (CEEPR). In addition, he serves as Part-time Assistant Professor at the Florence School of Regulation (FSR) of the European University Institute and Senior Director at FTI Consulting in London, advising on global power market design and regulation projects. Previously, he held positions as Research Scientist and Postdoctoral Associate at MITEI, conducting research on power systems and teaching related topics.

Schittekatte earned his PhD in energy economics from University Paris-Sud XI, completed the EMIN international master’s program in economics, and graduated as an engineer from Ghent University, Belgium. His research focuses on power market design and regulation, encompassing electricity retail rate reforms for decarbonization, distribution network tariffs, EU electricity market design amid energy crises, flexibility markets, and regulatory frameworks for independent aggregators. Key publications include “Reforming retail electricity rates to facilitate economy-wide decarbonization” (Joule, 2023, co-authored with Dharik Mallapragada, Paul L. Joskow, and Richard Schmalensee), “Electricity Retail Rate Design in a Decarbonizing Economy: An Analysis of Time-of-Use and Critical Peak Pricing” (The Energy Journal, 2024), “Least-cost distribution network tariff design in theory and practice” (The Energy Journal, 2020, with Leonardo Meeus), “Fighting the wrong battle? A critical assessment of arguments against nodal electricity prices in the European debate” (Energy Policy, 2022, with Anselm Eicke), and “Power Price Crisis in the EU 3.0: Proposals to Complete Long-Term Markets” (CEEPR Working Paper, 2023, with Carlos Batlle). His contributions influence policy debates on electricity markets and the energy transition.
