Timothy J. Duggan is Professor of Secondary English Education and Chair of the Teacher Education Department in the College of Education at Northeastern Illinois University. He earned his Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of South Dakota in 2003, with a dissertation on the uses of music in high school English/language arts classes. He holds an M.A. in English from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1990), a B.A. in English from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1983), and secondary certification in K-12 English from the same institution (1984). Duggan joined Northeastern Illinois University in 2009 as Assistant Professor of Secondary English Education, advancing to Associate Professor in 2013 and full Professor in 2019. Prior to this, he served as Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of South Dakota (2003-2008), where he also directed gifted programs and summer camps. His earlier career includes teaching English at Sonora Union High School in California (1984-1987), community colleges in Nebraska, and adjunct positions at Northwestern University and Northeastern Illinois University. At Northeastern Illinois University, he coordinates a partnership with Amundsen High School in Chicago Public Schools, supervises student teachers and clinical experiences, and teaches courses such as Teaching English in Secondary Schools, New Directions in Teaching English, Student Teaching Seminar, Shakespeare: Tragedies and Histories, and Young Adult Novel. He served as University Faculty-in-Residence at Amundsen High School from 2012 to 2020.
Duggan's research specializations include English language arts pedagogy, music integration in English language arts, arts integration, Shakespeare pedagogy, creative pedagogy, ecocritical pedagogy, and folk music. His key publications encompass books like Advanced Placement Classroom: Lord of the Flies (2013), Advanced Placement Classroom: Julius Caesar (2012), and Advanced Placement Classroom: Hamlet (2008); book chapters such as “M.A.S.T.E.R.ing the art of music integration” (2016) and “Musical adaptations and explorations in the English classroom” (2019); and peer-reviewed articles including “Song: What about the kids?” (2021, with C.Z. Goering), “Making school work that students value” (2018), and “Embracing the controversy: edTPA, corporate influence, and the cooptation of teacher education” (2015, with A.G. Dover et al.). He has received the Faculty Excellence Award for Service (2017-2018), Faculty Sabbatical Award (Spring 2016), Faculty Excellence Award for Teaching and Primary Duties (2014-2015), and Faculty Excellence Awards for Research and Creative Activity (2012-2013 and 2011-2012) at Northeastern Illinois University, along with a nomination for the McGraw Prize in Education (2017). Duggan has also directed Shakespeare camps and outreach programs, founded the Institute for Teachers of Gifted Youth, and contributed to theatrical productions and original music related to language arts pedagogy.
