Timothy Tansey is a Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He earned his PhD in Rehabilitation Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2001, an MS in Rehabilitation from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1998, and a BS in Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1994. With nearly 30 years of experience as a rehabilitation counselor, educator, and researcher, Dr. Tansey has made significant contributions to the field of vocational rehabilitation and disability employment.
Dr. Tansey's research specializations encompass evidence-based practices in vocational rehabilitation, self-regulation, self-determination, quality of life for persons with disabilities, resilience in spinal cord injuries, motivational interviewing in rehabilitation counseling, flourishing and college adjustment for student veterans and students with disabilities, and cultural competency for diverse populations. He has authored over 110 peer-reviewed articles, including key publications such as 'Assessing college life adjustment of students with disabilities: Application of the PERMA framework' (Tansey et al., Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin, 2018), 'Methodological application of multiple case study design using modified consensual qualitative research (CQR) analysis to identify best practices and organizational factors' (Anderson et al., Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation, 2014), and 'Company characteristics, disability inclusion practices, and employment of people with disabilities in the post COVID-19 job economy: A cross-sectional survey study' (Chan et al., Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation, 2021). As co-editor of the Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin, he also serves on editorial boards for numerous journals. Dr. Tansey has received prestigious awards, including Researcher of the Year from the National Council on Rehabilitation Education (2016), multiple Research Paper Awards from the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association (first and second place, 2017-2019), and President's Awards from NCRE (2005, 2010) and the Utah Rehabilitation Association (2004). He leads major federally funded initiatives, notably as principal investigator of the Vocational Rehabilitation Technical Assistance Center for Quality Employment, supported by a $16.7 million grant from the Rehabilitation Services Administration, which delivers training and technical assistance to enhance competitive integrated employment for individuals with disabilities.
