Professor Tom Measham is a Professor and Research Director at the Sustainable Minerals Institute within the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology at the University of Queensland. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the Australian National University. Previously, as a Principal Research Scientist and Group Leader at CSIRO, he led a portfolio of interdisciplinary research projects focused on economic transitions in resource-rich regions. He provides expert advice to government and industry on social and economic issues related to regional communities.
Measham's research focuses on energy transitions, mining impacts, post-mining transitions, resource booms and busts, unconventional gas development, regional development, social licence in mining, mine closure, and resilience in resource-dependent communities. Key specializations include economic impacts of the mining and gas industries, stakeholder values in post-mining economies, and adaptation in regional communities. He has produced 62 works between 2006 and 2025, including 50 journal articles, 6 conference publications, 5 book chapters, and 1 other output. Notable publications are 'Beyond the initial boom: energy transitions can improve rural development indicators' (2025, Journal of Rural Studies), 'Temporality and justice in mining impacted regions' (2025, Environmental Research: Energy), '50 years of Resources Policy – What is next? Key areas of future research' (2024, Resources Policy), 'Beyond closure: a literature review and research agenda for post-mining transitions' (2024, Resources Policy), and 'The role of education and workforce development in mine closure' (2025, Australian Centre for Geomechanics). He has published two books and more than 100 reports, along with over 50 scholarly articles. As Research Director of the Cooperative Research Centre for Transformations in Mining Economies (CRC TiME), Measham is internationally recognized for chairing the World Mining Congress Special Symposium on Mine Closure and Post-Mining Transitions, serving on the Steering Committee of the Global Coal Transitions Research Network, and co-chairing the 2024 International Association for Society and Natural Resources Conference.
