Dr. Tommy Soesmanto is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Accounting, Finance, and Economics at Griffith Business School, Griffith University. He joined the institution in 2015 and holds positions as Program Director for the Bachelor of Applied Financial Advice and Bachelor of Applied Financial Advice (OUA), as well as Deputy Director within the department. Previously, he served as a lecturer at Queensland International Business Academy (QIBT). Soesmanto earned his PhD in Economics from Griffith University in 2009, with a thesis titled "Currency Composition of Foreign Exchange Reserves: A Portfolio Balance Approach," based on a Bachelor of Business (Honours).
His teaching responsibilities include convening courses such as Economics for Decision Making (1303AFE), Tourism Economics (3203THS), and introductory statistics in dual-mode and mixed-mode formats. Soesmanto's research focuses on economics and business statistics education, student satisfaction, online and blended learning effectiveness, learning loss during the COVID-19 pandemic, and applied economics including foreign exchange reserves management and Indonesian economic policy. Notable publications include "Evaluation of the mixed-mode teaching design upon students’ learning satisfaction and academic performance in an introductory statistics course" (Heliyon, 2023, co-authored with Vu and Kariyawasam); "Dual Mode Delivery in an Introductory Statistics Course: Design and Evaluation" (Journal of Statistics Education, 2019); "Student satisfaction and online teaching" (Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education, 2018, co-authored with Guest, Rohde, Selvanathan, and Selvanathan); "7 ways to reduce the learning loss caused by the pandemic" (Griffith Asia Insights, 2022, co-authored); and "Analysis of the management of currency composition of foreign exchange reserves in Australia" (Economic Analysis and Policy, 2015). His scholarship has accumulated over 110 citations. Soesmanto has earned the 2019 Griffith University Teaching Excellence Award (Medal), 2018 and 2023 University Learning and Teaching Citation Awards in Griffith Business School, and Senior Fellow status with the Higher Education Academy. He engages publicly via commentaries in The Conversation and Griffith Asia Insights.
