Dr. Tony Calogero is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Department of Health Sciences at Curtin University. He is a dual-trained clinical and laboratory haematologist who consults to Royal Perth Hospital and St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospitals. He manages patients across all areas of haematology, both malignant and non-malignant. Following training at the University of Western Australia, he participated in a Myeloma research group at Alfred Hospital in association with Monash University. He holds the position of Senior Lecturer in the UWA Medical School, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. His leadership roles include Clinical Lead of Haematology for the WA Cancer and Palliative Care Network and Director of Haematology for WA Country Health Service. These positions highlight his commitment to equity in access to cancer care and haematology/oncology services for rural and remote patients in Western Australia.
Dr. Calogero's expertise covers a broad spectrum of haematological disorders, with special clinical interests in multiple myeloma, myeloproliferative neoplasms, thrombosis, and haemostasis. His academic focus centres on teaching undergraduate health professionals and junior doctors. He has presented on topics such as leukaemia at professional conferences like the Haematological Malignancies Update. Key publications include 'Differential expression of the Bcl-2 and Bax isoforms in CD19 positive B lymphocytes isolated from patients diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia' (Pathology, 2012, with J. Finlayson, B. Augustson, D. Joske, G. Cull); 'Diagnostic challenges in DAT-negative autoimmune haemolytic anaemia' (BMJ Case Reports, 2025, with L. McDuff, M. Lombard, S. Finch); and contributions to studies on IgA-mediated autoimmune haemolytic anaemia. Through his clinical practice, educational contributions, and leadership, Dr. Calogero advances haematology care, research, and training in the field.
