Professor Tony Moore serves as Professor in Geographical Information Science and Dean of the School of Surveying at the University of Otago, a position he has held since 2023. He earned his BSc (Hons) from the University of Portsmouth in 1993, MSc from the University of Leicester in 1994, and PhD from the University of Plymouth in 2001, with his doctoral research on the application of holistic expert systems to integrated coastal zone management. Earlier in his career, Moore worked as a coastal and marine GIS analyst at Plymouth Marine Laboratory in the United Kingdom and was a faculty member in the Department of Information Science at the University of Otago from 2001 to 2008. He currently directs the BSc, PGDipAppSci, and MAppSc programs in Geographical Information Systems.
Moore's research focuses on geovisualisation, cartography, spatial analysis, and modelling, applied to areas such as coastal financial risks from sea level rise, active transport to schools, health, agroecology, and wildlife conservation. He leads the STRAND Marsden-funded project examining climate change impacts on coastal property values in collaboration with economists and other institutions. Other significant projects include the BEATS study on built environment and active transport, augmented reality sandboxes for education, and spatial analysis for small-scale fisheries. He supervises PhD and master's students on topics like spatiotemporal movement modelling, urban 3D rendering, and climate adaptation through green infrastructure. Key publications comprise Rahimi, S., Moore, A. B., & Whigham, P. A. (2022) 'A vector-agent approach to spatiotemporal movement modelling and reasoning' in Scientific Reports; Nguyen et al. (2022) 'Price recovery after the flood' in Australian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics; and Smith et al. (2022) 'Geovisualization' in Technology-Driven Geomorphology. Awards include the University of Otago Research Group Award (2019) for the BEATS team, New Zealand Spatial Excellence Award (2016), and best poster at COSIT 2013. Moore is President of the New Zealand Cartographic Society (since 2022), serves on editorial boards of International Journal of Geographical Information Science and others, and participates in International Cartographic Association commissions.
