About Tony

Professor Tony Wirth serves as Professor and Head of the School of Computer Science in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney. He joined the University of Sydney in April 2024 after a 19-year career at the University of Melbourne, where he held the position of Professor in the School of Computing and Information Systems and served as Deputy Head (Research). Wirth earned his BSc (Hons) and MSc degrees from the University of Melbourne and completed his PhD at Princeton University. His academic career has focused on advancing theoretical computer science, particularly in the areas of algorithms and data mining.

Wirth's research contributions are evidenced by his extensive publication record in prestigious venues. Key publications include 'Clustering with Qualitative Information' (2005, 634 citations), 'Informational Complexity and the Direct Sum Problem for Simultaneous Message Complexity' (2001, 316 citations), 'Maximizing Quadratic Programs: Extending Grothendieck's Inequality' (2004, 273 citations), 'Automatic Generation of Protein Structure Cartoons with Pro-origami' (2011, 216 citations), and 'Analyzing Shared and Team Mental Models' (2001, 192 citations). More recent works encompass 'Correlation Clustering in Data Streams' (2021), 'O(1)-Round MPC Algorithms for Multi-Dimensional Grid Graph Connectivity' (2025), and 'Lower Bounds for Approximate (& Exact) k-Disjoint-Shortest-Paths' (2026). These publications demonstrate his expertise in approximation algorithms, streaming data processing, clustering techniques, and parallel computing. As Head of the School of Computer Science, Wirth oversees research and teaching initiatives that position the school among Australia's top institutions in the field.
