Dr Tosh Stewart is a Teaching Fellow in the Philosophy programme at the University of Otago, part of the School of Arts in the Humanities Division. He is listed among the academic staff and lectures PHIL101 Mind and Reality, an introductory course exploring key philosophical topics. Dr Stewart also serves as Specialist for Academic Committees and Services in the Division of Health Sciences, functioning as the primary contact for the Division's Academic Board. In this capacity, he supports various academic governance processes, including PVC variation approvals and secretariat services for university committees such as Senate. He is one of two specialists embedded within the Division of Health Sciences to assist with academic committee operations.
Dr Tosh Stewart participates in key university bodies, including attendance at Senate meetings where academic policies are discussed. In 2018, he received the Echo360 Australia and New Zealand Academic Champion Grant, recognizing outstanding contributions to teaching excellence. He has engaged with scholarly work by offering feedback on presentations to the Philosophy programme, notably on topics concerning decolonising universities, myth-histories of the nation, and challenges to academic freedom in Aotearoa New Zealand. Additionally, Tosh Stewart has contributed to public discourse on ethical matters, penning an opinion piece entitled 'Not right using law for restricting bad choices' in the Otago Daily Times on 28 September 2020, addressing public opinion on drug legalization.
