Dr. Trey Cunningham serves as Chair and Professor of Sport and Motorsport Management at Belmont Abbey College, where he chairs the Sports Management Department and delivers a holistic liberal arts education emphasizing sports marketing, sports facilities and events management, and organizational theory and leadership in sports. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Southern Mississippi, along with an M.S. and B.S. from Louisiana Tech University. Certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Dr. Cunningham's research specializations include sport management pedagogy, experiential learning activities for students, sport video production and broadcasting, and emerging sport technologies such as IoT, augmented reality, and virtual reality. His expertise in sport security and safety encompasses training in Security and Safety Exercise and Evaluation, Threat and Risk Assessment, Prevention and Response to Suicide Bombing Incidents, Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings, and Emergency Response Coordination. He is recognized for innovative teaching methods, including the use of Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality devices to explore techniques in the metaverse, and offers courses such as Introduction to Sport Management, Technology in Sport, Organizational Theory and Leadership in Sport, Coaching Management, Event and Facility Management, Sportcasting, Internship, and Introduction to Exercise Science.
Dr. Cunningham's scholarly contributions feature peer-reviewed publications and presentations. Notable works include Hall, S., Marciani, L., Phillips, D., & Cunningham, T. (2009). 'Spectator perceptions of security management at a NASCAR Event,' published in The Sport Journal, 12(1). His presentations encompass Cunningham, T., & Beekwilder (November 2022). 'Lessons learned: A multi-year pedagogical approach to teaching motorsport history with undergraduate students' at the Michael R. Argetsinger Symposium on International Motor Racing History in Watkins Glen, NY; Cunningham, T., Catchpole, D., & Brown, M. (November 2020).
