Trish Amason is an associate professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, part of the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, where she has served on the faculty for 30 years. Currently serving as Undergraduate Director, she has held various administrative positions within the department and taught more than 24 different classes. Amason earned her B.S.E. in communication and journalism education from the University of Arkansas, her M.A. from the University of Kentucky, and her Ph.D. in Communication from Purdue University. Her dedication to the university was recognized with a 30 Years of Service award in 2024.
Amason's scholarly work centers on family communication, social support, gender studies, health communication, and intercultural communication. With 17 publications listed on her academic profile, key contributions include "Academic Success: Perceptions of Student-Athletes, Learning Specialists, and Academic Advisors" (2021), "Family Stories: Collections of Narratives Revealing Family Identity" (2020), "Conflicts with heterosexual partners about sexual discrepancies: Conflict avoidance, de-escalation strategies, facilitators to conversation" (2016), "Family Support for Weight Management: Links between Perceived Quantity and Quality" (2012), "Professionally accomplished women's perceptions of father-daughter communication: An exploratory study" (2012), and "College students' descriptions of conflicts during safer-sex talk: Managing challenging, intimate conversations" (2012). Her research has accumulated 347 citations and over 8,200 reads. In spring 2024, she received a Research Fellowship at the U of A Rome Center to investigate family communication and support among students studying abroad. Additional honors include the ACUE micro-credential "Creating an Inclusive and Supportive Learning Environment" (2022), ACUE certification in effective college teaching, and leadership roles such as President of the Southern States Communication Association (2009-2010) and recipient of the T. Earle Johnson-Edwin Paget Distinguished Service Award (2018).
