Umar Choudry, MD, is an Associate Professor and Chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He earned his medical degree from Aga Khan University, completed his general surgery residency at West Virginia University, and finished his plastic surgery fellowship training at the Mayo Clinic. Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Choudry maintains a comprehensive clinical practice in plastic surgery, serving both adult and pediatric patients across multiple locations in Minneapolis and Maple Grove, including the University of Minnesota Health Clinics and Surgery Center, Maple Grove Clinics, and University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital. His clinical interests encompass reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, with specific expertise in breast surgery, facial reconstruction and plastic surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, cancer reconstruction, post-bariatric body contouring, oculoplastics, and elective hand surgery.
Dr. Choudry is actively involved in clinical and outcomes research, focusing on breast reconstruction, wounds, cancer reconstruction, and microsurgery. He has contributed significantly to the literature, with key publications such as "The effect of surgery and grade on outcome of gastrointestinal stromal tumors" (Archives of Surgery, 2001), "Prognosis and management of extramammary Paget’s disease and the association with secondary malignancies" (Journal of the American College of Surgeons, 2003), "The vascularized medial femoral condyle periosteal bone flap for the treatment of recalcitrant bony nonunions" (Annals of Plastic Surgery, 2008), "Increased adipose protein carbonylation in human obesity" (Obesity, 2011), and "Postmastectomy reconstruction outcomes after intraoperative evaluation with indocyanine green angiography versus clinical assessment" (Annals of Surgical Oncology, 2016). His work has garnered substantial citations in the field. Dr. Choudry has been honored multiple times as a Top Doctor, including by Minnesota Monthly in 2019 and Mpls.St.Paul Magazine in 2023, 2024, and 2025. As a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, he serves on various committees and editorial subcommittees for professional education networks and journals. Additionally, he has delivered presentations, such as "Contouring After Bariatric Surgery" and panel discussions at the University of Minnesota's 16th Annual Bariatric Education Day in 2020, and contributes to the training of residents in the Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Integrated Residency program.
