Van Hong Thi Hoang completed her PhD at the University of New England Business School in 2018. Her doctoral research was under the principal supervision of Associate Professor Subba Reddy Yarram, whose expertise lies in corporate finance, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, entrepreneurship, and small businesses. She enrolled for her PhD on 23 February 2015.
During her association with UNE Business School in Armidale, NSW, Australia, Van Hong Thi Hoang contributed to research in development economics. She co-authored the paper 'Malnutrition Expectations and Precautionary Demand for Children: Evidence from Vietnam,' published in the Forum of International Development Studies in July 2015. Collaborating with Eric T. Stuen from the University of Idaho and Nam Trung Hoang from UNE Business School, the study utilized a sample of 5,966 Vietnamese households. It employed Logit models regressing a birth indicator on self-constructed measures of nutrient consumption including calories, protein, and a micronutrient index, alongside other controls. The findings revealed significant positive effects of these nutrition proxies—indicative of parental expectations regarding child health risks—on the probability of households having a child. The micronutrient index showed the strongest effect, moderated by children's health insurance status. This provides evidence that nutritional constraints influence precautionary demand for children, suggesting implications for population dynamics amid food price fluctuations or supply disruptions.
