Varun Grover is the George & Boyce Billingsley Endowed Chair and Distinguished Professor of Information Systems in the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Previously, he served as the David D. Glass Endowed Chair and Distinguished Professor of Information Systems in the same college from 2017 to 2021 and as the William S. Lee Distinguished Professor of Information Systems at Clemson University. He earned a Ph.D. in management information systems and a master's in information systems from the University of Pittsburgh, an M.B.A. from Southern Illinois University, and a B.Tech. in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. Grover's research examines the impacts of digitalization on individuals, organizations, and society, with a focus on digital competition, artificial intelligence, process change, data breaches, mobile apps, and ethical implications. He has authored over 450 publications, more than 300 in top refereed journals including MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of Management Information Systems, and Journal of the Association for Information Systems. Notable works include "Not Only Data: The Necessity of Abstract Thinking to Make Sense of Digital Phenomena" with K. Lyytinen (Journal of Information Technology, 2023), "Digital 'x'—Charting a Path for Digital-Themed Research" with A. Baiyere et al. (Information Systems Research, 2023), "An Empirical Investigation of Company Response to Data Breaches" with H. Nikkhah (MIS Quarterly, 2022), and his third book on process change with M. Lynne Markus.
Grover's influence is reflected in his Google Scholar h-index of 104 and over 59,000 citations, ranking him among the top researchers globally in information systems, including 2nd in productivity in top IS journals from 1990-2016 and top 5 in multiple h-index studies. He has received the Association for Information Systems' LEO Award for Lifetime Exceptional Achievement in Information Systems (2020), Thomson Reuters recognition as one of 100 Highly Cited Scholars in all business disciplines (2013), Clemson University's Alumni Award for Outstanding Research (2012), the Indian Institute of Technology Distinguished Alumni Award (2013), University of Arkansas Outstanding Faculty Member Award (2020), multiple best paper awards from the Decision Sciences Institute, Academy of Management, and others, and teaching honors such as the Alfred G. Smith Award (twice) and Outstanding MBA Professor Award (multiple times). As a Fellow and Distinguished Member Cum Laude of AIS, he has served as Senior Editor for MIS Quarterly (two terms), Journal of the AIS (two terms), and others, edited special issues and books, chaired over 40 doctoral dissertations, mentored 45 PhD students placed at leading institutions, and delivered keynotes at international conferences including ICIS, AMCIS, and global IT forums.
