Viktoria Kahui is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Otago's Otago Business School. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Otago (2006), an MSc in Environmental and Resource Economics from University College London (1999), and a BSc (Hons) in Economics from Brunel University, UK (1994). Her professional career began as a Research Assistant at the Centre for European Economic Research in Germany (2000-2002), followed by a role as Policy Analyst at the New Zealand Ministry of Fisheries (2005-2006). She then served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Tromsø, Norway (2006-2009), before joining the University of Otago as Senior Lecturer in 2009, where she was promoted to Associate Professor.
Kahui specialises in environmental and ecological economics, with a particular focus on natural resource economics and fishery economics. She has published 34 refereed journal articles, amassing over 760 citations, in prestigious outlets such as Science of the Total Environment, Ecological Economics, and Marine Resource Economics. Notable publications include 'Marine heatwaves and commercial fishing in New Zealand' (2024, with M. Lacheheb and I. Noy), 'Comparative analysis of Rights of Nature (RoN) cases worldwide: Features of emergence and design' (2024, with C.W. Armstrong and M. Aanesen), and 'The impact of ocean warming on selected commercial fisheries in New Zealand' (2024, with H.J. Mediodia and I. Noy). Her accolades include the 2018 OUSA Teaching Excellence Award for the Otago Business School, the 2012 Otago Business School Emerging Researcher Award, and the Best Student Paper Award at the 2004 International Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade Conference. Kahui has secured research grants as principal investigator from the University of Otago and held key roles such as Master Programme Director, Māori and Pacific Liaison Officer, Senate member, and Executive Committee member for the International Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade (2014-2018). She supervises PhD students and contributes to various university committees.
