Wanbin Zhang is a Chair Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. He earned a Bachelor of Science in 1985 and a Master of Engineering in 1988 from East China University of Science and Technology, followed by a Ph.D. from Osaka University in 1997. His career includes positions as Research Assistant at East China University of Science and Technology, Visiting Scholar and Assistant Professor at Osaka University, Visiting Fellow at Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, and Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 2003, advancing to Distinguished Professor in 2013.
Zhang’s research focuses on organic synthesis and asymmetric catalysis, including efficient methods for synthesizing drugs and key intermediates. He has led numerous projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and other national programs, with several成果 achieving industrial application, such as the efficient synthesis of artemisinin, recognized in China’s Top Ten Scientific and Technological News in 2012. He has published extensively in leading journals including Angewandte Chemie International Edition, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Nature Communications, and Chemical Reviews. Zhang has received numerous honors, including the Shanghai Natural Science Award First Prize in 2020, election as a Fellow of the Chinese Chemical Society in 2020, the Thieme Chemistry Journal Award in 2013, and multiple SJTU teaching and research awards. He serves on editorial boards of several journals and holds memberships in professional societies such as the Chinese Chemical Society and American Chemical Society.
